the permanence of art.

This piece was created in December out of painted steel shelving from old refrigerators that I found in a dumpster. I bent them and left open spaces that I filled with scrap metal pieces that I bent. I used a MIG welder to put all of the pieces together. the bottom of the piece came out less organically than I wanted and looks quite like the form of a dress. The idea for the piece completely transformed while I was making it because of how caught up I got in the things the found objects i had could do with lines and movement. Once I figured out how great my objects were I transformed my idea to fit with the nature of the materials i was using. In this piece i struggled with giving up multiple ideas to create more coherency in my form and create something that I felt has a solid voice. I really love this form and it means a lot to me. I got my first big burn from welding on this piece right on my neck at 4 a.m. because the metal shop was closing and I decided to do one last quick weld; when i went to put the Sculpture  up i saw something on the ground that I had to put away next to the piece. I bent over and my weld that I had just made snapped into my neck and scratch it and first and then as I continued bending over it burned the rest of the way up my neck. It didn't really hurt but it looks horrible and it still itches sometimes.
